How to be a real and true friend?

Updated: Mar 22, 2021

“A true friend accepts who you are but also helps you to become who you should be.”

Friendship is among the greatest gifts that life can offer. Being a good friend means trying your best to show that you care by being an attentive listener, enjoying quality time with them, and sending supportive notes or presents to your friends. When you strive to become a good friend, your friends will reciprocate the same.

What does it mean to you to be a genuine and real friend? Do you think you are a good friend?

Here are a few attributes of a good friend that will surely help strengthen the bond you have with them.

1. Always listen to them

Try to grasp the situation from your friend’s perspective. Ask questions so that you can get an understanding of what they mean, but remember the key element is to always connect to them. You don’t have to provide solutions all the time, maybe sometimes they just want someone to listen and make them feel better.

2. Be honest, no matter what

Be honest and faithful. No one would like to be friends with someone who’s lying. Friends are supposed to give you a reality check, and I agree that it is tough, but a wise man once said that “the wounds of a friend are faithful, yet the love of an enemy is deceitful.” How true is that, right?

3. Make time for them

This attribute is wholesome, shows complete recognition, and it holds importance when your friend is making a mess or is ruining things up. Be there as they reach on top or either when they hit rock bottom. Cry with them and laugh with them. Just by being present at their side shows that you are a supportive, and well also because actions speak louder than words.

4. Be expressive and tell them how you feel

You do not have to do anything fancy to express your love and neither do you have to make a tremendous effort all the time. Just by making them realize how important they are to you, you can make a difference. So never hesitate!

5. Stay in touch

If you are not living closer to them, tell your friends that you are there for them by attempting to stay in touch regularly via social media, email, or phone calls. At one point or another, every friendship hits a speed bump so prove to your friend that you can work through the tough periods. Friendships often become deeper in tough times. Also, NEVER give up on your friends just because you have been experiencing personal problems.

6. Confront issues and solve them together

It requires a lot of effort and determination to be a good friend. Friendships aren’t always rainbows and unicorns. Sometimes it is thunder and lightning and requires dedication.

Please note that there are individuals like you who are searching for friends. So, be a good friend, make good friends, and you are good to go!
