Mental Health

Updated: Mar 22, 2021

You’ll only be able to make complete sense when you’re mentally stable.

What is meant by mental health?

I wish people would stop thinking that mental health issues don’t exist just because they are invisible or the fact that their timely sadness can be considered depression. Mental health includes all the significant components of life, and to have a healthy, peaceful life; we should consider some aspects. Therefore it involves our emotional, psychological wellbeing and affects how we think, act and feel. Mental health is vital in every stage of life from our childhood till adolescence and so on.

Some top mental illness

Some top mental illnesses are; Avoidant Personality Disorder, Narcissistic Personality Disorder, Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder, Paranoid Personality Disorder, Schizoid Personality Disorder, Major Depressive Disorder, Bipolar Disorder, Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Postpartum Depression. The most difficult to treat amongst all these is BPD- borderline personality disorder, marked by the pattern of ongoing instability in moods, behavior, self-image and functioning.

People who have no idea what it feels like to have a mental health issue; they ignore and label it as “retardedness” or “Pagalpan”. Throwing these words around causes stigmatization and leads to the patient fulfilling the self-fulfilling prophecy, which is detrimental to their mental health.

A FEW COPING STRATEGIES

  1. CBT – Cognitive Behavioral Therapy – it is goal-oriented psychotherapy treatment. Its goal is to change patterns of thinking or behavior that are behind people’s difficulties, and so change the way they feel.

  2. DBT – Dialectical Behavioral Therapy – Its main goals are to teach people how to live in the moment, develop healthy ways to cope with stress, regulate their emotions, and improve their relationships with others. It is used specifically for borderline personality disorder.

  3. Meditation – a practice where an individual uses a technique – such as mindfulness, or focusing the mind on a particular object, thought, or activity  to train attention and awareness, and achieve a mentally clear and emotionally calm and stable state.

  4. Coloring books for Anxiety – Coloring has the ability to relax the fear center of your brain, the amygdala. It induces the same state as meditating by reducing the thoughts of a restless mind

MENTAL HEALTH

Sometimes we tend to neglect little things that surround us, not even realizing that these little things are worth the risk of developing mental problems. There is a possibility of developing mental problems through genes and family history as well. Causes for developing may rely upon extreme to moderate.

Also, life drags us into some tricky situations where you can’t think straight, and later results are seen as a mental trauma or breakdown. Your life experience may revolve around the history of stress, abuse, especially if it’s linked with childhood. Not only these, but if we look into it from another aspect, we may come across several other reasons NOT attached with emotions but with some scientific reasoning. This may include a chemical imbalance in the brain, traumatic brain injury or pregnant lady exposed to a deadly virus or chemical exposure.

In today’s world, we can’t rely on one factor. There are many other factors we indeed ignore or don’t consider at all. Mental health is a significant drawback around the globe. There is a constant barrier for people in receiving the care and attention they need. Especially in the current situation of the pandemic, coping techniques are essential immediately because of the quarantine and isolation. Coping techniques doesn’t only highlight the therapies or appointments. It can be done in so many ways such as by practicing breathing exercise (for panic attacks), a cup of tea or either a little talk with you.

Make yourself productive and make your time unwind through involving yourself in some fun activities. Educate yourself, acknowledge its existence and help yourself and others around you.
